Safety monitoring around drilling operations
A partner delivered a video analytics pilot for a drilling operation in the CIS / Asia region. The system monitored PPE, hazardous zones and personnel actions around operating drilling equipment.
17 cameras and six loudspeakers
The installation combined 17 explosion-protected cameras, a video-processing server, six loudspeakers and operator workstations. Views covered the rig floor, derrickman’s platform, pipe ramp, wellhead, pipe-handling areas, stairs, drawworks, pumps and drilling-fluid work areas.
Implemented detector set
Drilling safety — 21 implemented scenarios
A set of implemented detectors for drilling rigs, covering personnel protection, dynamic hazardous zones, equipment states and operating procedures. Select the required scenarios for the customer’s rig and configure the camera views, zones and triggering conditions.
PPE and chemical handling
- Missing protective helmet.
- Missing eye, face or respiratory protection while handling chemicals in the mud-mixing area.
- Missing protective workwear or exposed skin while handling chemical reagents.
Working at height
- A person near the edge of the rig floor, taking guardrails and fall protection into account.
- An unsecured fall-arrest harness on the derrickman.
- Moving outside the guardrail of the derrickman’s platform or basket.
- Working at height without an attached fall-arrest harness.
Stairway movement
- Moving on stairs without the required support or contact points.
Hazardous rig zones
- Personnel on the rotary table while the top drive moves with the pipe string in the well.
- Personnel in the hazardous movement zone of the power tong.
- People on the rotary table during well logging, pressure testing or cementing.
- People in the hazardous pipe-ramp zone during pipe lifting.
Equipment and operating procedures
- Servicing or repairing the drawworks while the mechanism is powered.
- Exceeding the configured speed when raising or lowering the bottom-hole assembly.
- Removing blowout-prevention equipment before the waiting-on-cement period ends.
- Servicing the screw conveyor with covers open and the motor running.
- Personnel on the rig floor while power tongs operate and the pulling cable is under tension.
- Placing or removing pipe at the derrickman’s platform before the travelling block has fully stopped.
Events requiring response
- Detection of a person lying down.
- Detection of signs of a gas, oil or water influx.
- Detection of fire.
All 21 detectors were delivered in a successful partner pilot using 17 cameras and six loudspeakers.
From detection to review
An event record includes its time, location and type, together with an image and video excerpt. Operators and supervisors review the evidence; loudspeakers provide alerts in the operating areas. Camera views, the event archive and reports support follow-up.
Result
All 21 detectors were delivered and the pilot was successful. The implemented set is available as the basis for selecting and configuring scenarios at other drilling rigs.
