PPE and work safety monitoring at a CHP plant

A pilot at a major power generation company combined detailed PPE checks with work-zone context and shift-supervisor response.

Safety control inside a working power plant

A major energy company piloted video analytics at a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The project addressed a practical problem: checking protective equipment consistently across industrial work areas while giving the shift supervisor evidence that could support an immediate response.

What the pilot monitored

The project materials describe 25 types of PPE and industrial safety violations. Detection followed a cascade: locate a person, identify the relevant personnel group from workwear, check the required protective equipment, then consider the work zone and posture.

  • Hard hats and chin straps.
  • Protective face shields, including their working position.
  • Gloves, protective trousers and safety boots.
  • Fastened workwear and sleeves that are not rolled up.
  • Presence and behaviour in configured hazardous work areas.

From an observation to a response

An event was passed to the shift supervisor for review. The supervisor could contact the worker by radio and arrange corrective action. Combining PPE checks with location and work context made the notification more useful than an isolated equipment-detection result.

Engineering and acceptance

The pilot used video from actual plant conditions, including relatively low-resolution source streams. Camera suitability and each equipment check need to be evaluated together: an overview camera that sees a person may not resolve a chin strap or glove. Checks should cover normal work, temporary occlusion, difficult lighting and the supervisor’s review workflow.

Automatic stop and restart interfaces were described as an engineering option, subject to the plant’s control-system design. They are separate from the supervisor notification workflow and are not presented here as a completed safety interlock.

Project value

The pilot demonstrated a workflow for detailed PPE observation, contextual event registration and operational response at a CHP site.
