A large gold mining and processing operation in the CIS region.
Location: CISContinuous belt scanning connects early defect detection to the mine’s process-control system, helping the operating team act before damage develops into a long production stoppage.
Why the conveyor mattered
The operation transports ore on a conveyor belt approximately 1.7 km long. The belt is a critical link in the production chain: a significant cut or failure can interrupt material transport and create substantial recovery work.
The project called for automatic detection of belt damage, clear information about its position and a connection to the existing process-control system.
What was implemented
The installed system uses 2D scanners to inspect the moving belt. It identifies cuts, abrasive wear and lateral displacement and records defect characteristics and position. Monitoring of defect development supports the planning of preventative maintenance.
The inspection result is connected to the industrial process-control system. Critical damage can trigger an automatic conveyor stop through the configured integration, while incident records retain the type and location of the finding.
Testing the complete response
During a documented test, the system detected a cut within seconds, stopped the conveyor automatically and recorded the defect’s length, depth and location. The test therefore covered both recognition and the equipment response.
Implementation also took account of the operator’s infrastructure and information-security requirements. The source describes an industrial deployment with the inspection system integrated into the plant’s control environment.
Project outcome
The operating team gained continuous visibility of belt condition and an automatic response to critical damage. The source reports detection of all critical damage in its stated test context; this is not a universal accuracy guarantee for other belts or operating conditions.
The practical value lies in earlier intervention, recorded defect evidence and better maintenance planning. No independently quantified reduction in downtime or repair expenditure is specified for this deployment.
