Define the workload
List the camera streams, selected scenarios, required detection latency, operator response and local interfaces. Record the available compute, network capacity and data-retention constraints. Separate tasks that must operate during an uplink outage from work that can wait for the centre.
Select a processing model
| Approach | Data sent to the centre | Link and response considerations | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central video processing | Continuous camera streams | Requires sustained uplink capacity. Central recognition depends on the delivery of video. | Sites with reliable high-capacity links and a preference for central compute. |
| Central snapshot processing | Periodic still images | Reduces the data sent, but events shorter than the sampling interval can be missed. | Slow-changing conditions and periodic visual checks. |
| Edge processing | Events, statistics and selected clips | Recognition stays on site. Local buffering and later upload are designed for the expected outages. | Remote rigs, moving sites, limited links and time-sensitive local workflows. |
| Hybrid processing | Selected video plus local events | Assign each task to the site or centre according to latency, bandwidth and compute needs. | Mixed fleets and workloads that combine local response with central analysis. |
Specify event and evidence transfer
Define the event envelope, identity of the originating site and camera, timestamps, supporting media and the policy for transferring clips. Decide whether evidence is uploaded with the event, requested by an operator or transferred within a scheduled window.
Design for link outages
Size the local queue and evidence storage for the expected outage duration and event rate. Specify retry, acknowledgement and deduplication behaviour with the receiving system. Define what happens when storage is full and how operators see an incomplete transfer.
After reconnection, verify the order and completeness of delivered events, clock handling and the availability of the referenced evidence. Buffering alone does not establish end-to-end delivery guarantees.
Connect local systems
Agree the interface to telemetry, BLE positioning, operator displays and notification devices. For each signal, document its source, timestamp, units, identifier and use within scenario logic.
Acceptance checklist
- Representative video and scenario accuracy, including difficult conditions.
- Detection and local-notification latency.
- Uplink outage, continued local operation and recovery.
- Queue limits, evidence retention and upload completion.
- Version update, rollback and local-maintenance procedure.
